'Guardians of the Galaxy' is already better than the 'Avengers' game
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy has proved more promising than Square Enix's Avengers until 2020, even before the first titles were released. Ace's next entry in his ongoing video game partnership with Marvel anticipated everything Star-Lord would do and move him forward.
Guardians marks Square Enix's second major foray into the Marvel gaming world, following last year's first crossover with Crystal Dynamics-developed Marvel's The Avengers. The new game from Deus Ex Studio Eidos Montreal is a new version of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, and it looks much better than its predecessor. The Guardians game is already an improvement on the original game, especially as it is single player and free of microtransactions.
Developed by Crystal Dynamics, the Marvels Avengers aimed to reinvent the source material for the games and mimic familiar faces such as Raccoon Tail and Groot from every branch of the Marvel movies. Based on our handy preview, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, an action adventure developed by Edio Montreal and released by Square Enix, takes the expected turn, but does it with enough novelty to feel like a different adventure from anything we've seen before. Like Avengers playing as your favorite hero, Guardians sees you wrestling with the guidance of Starlord Peter Quill, a riff from the comics in the movies.
Putting Quill at the center of the fight and the ability for the rest of the Guardians to fight side by side makes the experience more cohesive and offers the opportunity to get to know their characters in a way that is missing in Marvel's Avengers, where the fight seems to be a more individual affair despite the multiplayer focus. It's a shame, because the Avengers game seems to be something like Guardians of the Galaxy. But as this week's trailer for the Cosmic Cube event shows, gameplay is a more solitary experience, with few other players having their own adventures.
It is quite certain that Guardians of the Galaxy will have many Easter eggs that do not appear in the Marvel Comics, and each of them will probably be a reference to the Marvels Avengers game. It's a blow to a video game universe that includes multiple games, characters and the Marvel Cinematic Universe to have so few funny Easter eggs and in-game items, but Square Enix will likely take full advantage of its position to ensure that War of Wakanda and Guardians of The Galaxy cross paths as often as possible. The idea of expanding the connected game universe for Marvel's The Avengers is something fans have dreamed of, and when that kind of real crossover happens, they expect it to continue in the game.
