'Elden Ring' Has Sold Over 12 Million Copies In 18 Days
In a press release (thanks for the tweet), publisher Bandai Namco and developer FromSoftware revealed that Elden Ring has sold more than 12 million copies globally across all platforms, including digital sales. Announced in a press release on FromSoftwares' official website, Elden Ring has sold 1 million copies in Japan and 11 million abroad, bringing the global total to 12 million. In addition to the impressive sales, a new press release mentions the desire to expand the game world beyond Elden Ring. In a press release, the companies revealed sales figures for the popular game and mentioned the possibility of expanding the intellectual property beyond Elden Ring FromSoftware.
The new press release also claims that 1 million of those sales were made in Japan, the only region where developer FromSoftware self-released the game. More than 1 million units have been sold in Japan, according to a FromSoftware press release. Developer FromSoftware said it has sold over 12 million copies worldwide since its soft launch, including over one million in Japan alone (as of March 14, 2022).
The actual number is north of 12 million, as sales officially topped that number on March 14 (two days ago). Over 12 million units represent digital sales and physical book shipments to retailers (but not necessarily to consumers). By comparison, FromSoftware's latest bestseller, Dark Souls 3, sold more than 10 million copies in four years, meaning Elden Ring surpassed that number in a matter of weeks.
FromSoftware's previous version of Elden Ring, Axs sold 2 million copies in 10 days, while Dark Souls 3, the best-selling game in the series, took 4 years to reach 10 million copies sold worldwide. Judging by how well FromSoftwares' Elden Ring is doing, it seems appropriate to compare Elden Ring to Pokemon Legends Arceus, which sold 6.5 million copies in seven days - and Pokemon Legends Arceus, a game from a franchise that already has a huge number of fans. However, based on how Ring of Elden works, it seems appropriate to compare Ring of Elden to Pokemon Legends Arceus, which sold 6.5 million copies in seven days - and it's a game from a franchise that's already a huge success. It was supposed to be available in January, but was finally released on February 25 on PlayStation 5 and 4, Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One and PC via Steam.
In an email to the Bandai Namco press, the game's publisher discusses Elden Rings sales data, a brief on game director Hidetaka Miyazaki, and the game director's accomplice, fantasy author George R.R. At the helm of the project was Hidetaka Miyazaki, known for creating the infamous complex games in the series, and also led Bloodborne and FromSoftwares in previous versions.
With a world written by George R.R. Martin George R.R. Martin, Elden Ring takes the familiar "soul formula" and moves into the open world and has been praised by the entire gaming world, currently ranked 96 on Metacritic. There's something special and pure about Elden Ring, something that many of today's greedy AAA publishers seem to increasingly overlook: make a good video game first and foremost. Whether it's publishers casually following industry trends, gutting their studios in the process, or stuffing games with more microtransactions than actual game features, oh my god, Elden Ring seems like a breath of fresh air. Yet like a shining star in an increasingly uniform gaming landscape, Elden Ring hovers above the leaderboard, defying any template conventions, and has sold a truly impressive 12 million units in just a few weeks.
Elden Ring by FromSoftwares eclipsed the sales of other soulful titles by a notable margin, reaching an elite level of popularity that only a select few titles have earned. Elden Rings' closest open-world sales equivalent is Cyberpunk 2077, which posted a whopping 13.7 million sales in its first 21 days, despite launch issues that forced delisting and Cyberpunk 2077's widely circulated return program. Dark Souls 3 previously had speed record holder. is the best-selling title in the history of Bandai Namcos, earning three million sales worldwide since its release in 2016.
Dark Souls 3 reportedly crossed the 3 million mark within a few months. At this rate, the total sales of a single game will soon surpass the 27 million total sales of the Demon/Dark Souls series in nearly a decade (as of May 2020). That's a staggering number considering the game was released less than three weeks ago (18 days). To put this into perspective, FromSoftware's previous best-selling game was 2016's Dark Souls 3, which has sold 10 million total in 2020.
Since the original Demons Souls in 2011, which sold a respectable but relatively paltry one million copies in its first year, developer FromSoftware has steadily built up a fan base for its unique action RPG brand. Grand Theft Auto V has since sold a staggering 160 million copies across multiple generations of hardware, although much of that long-term success has been due to the continued pull of GTA Online.
Except that Elden Ring managed to sell over 12 million copies in just 18 days. Figures shared by the company itself and taken from "Batch Distribution and Download Sales Data" as of March 14, 2022.
